2010 Idaho Smart Growth Accomplishments

  • Provided assistance to 18 communities around Idaho with presentations and trainings to community groups, policy input on local and regional planning, coalition building, and community outreach.
  • Published Idaho’s first Land Use Analysis, which is charting a path forward for changing the way Idaho grows (read the full report at: www.idahosmartgrowth.org, click on the “Resources” tab),
  • Formed Active Living Task Forces to create healthier and safer communities in Nampa, Lewiston, Moscow, Idaho Falls, and Blaine County: 
  • Conducted 23 Safe Routes to Schools presentation in 14 communities, reached over 200 people, including members from 36 communities, city planners, public health staff and school staff
  • Created a national model to develop relationships between land use and school facilities planners that will lead to coordinated planning efforts in Idaho: and
  • Maintained a coalition of more than 50 organizations and individuals who support transportation choices.
  • Received a Gold Transportation Champion May in Motion Award
  • Helped Coeur d’Alene begin to implement its Complete Streets policies by bringing key stakeholders together
  • Partnered with the Urban Land Institute to complete a report about how to create and encourage quality infill development
  • Held a sold-out 10th anniversary event, coordinated by 10 committed volunteers who met monthly
  • Surveyed communities about perceptions of Safe Routes to Schools policies
  • Conducted a “Downtown Housing Livability Tour”
  • Launched a blog on transportation issues, www.treasurevalleyinmotion.org, and a Facebook page, “Biking, Walking and Riding in the Treasure Valley”, that gained more than 600 friends in less than a year
  • Taught a class on “sustainable cities” for Boise State University
  • Co-hosted a visit from Robert McNulty on “The Economics of Amenity and Public Art Strategies”
  • Ran a series of radio ads promoting transportation choices and our blog
  • Helped create the Idaho Pedestrian and Bicycle Alliance
  • Generated public input to the Governor’s Task Force on Modernizing Transportation Funding, resulting in a recommendation for a local option sales tax
  • Gave 10 presentations on Idaho Working Lands and met with several community leaders about working land conservation
  • Presented on Complete Streets for Active Living and Health Communities at CTAI Mobility Conference, Idaho APA annual conference, and six other presentations in four communities.
