On Saturday, November 6 the Idaho Smart Growth Board will be honoring Boise architect and founding board member Charles Hummel with the first Charles Hummel Award (formerly recognized as the President’s Award) during the Idaho Smart Growth 10th Anniversary and Grow Smart Awards celebration.
“It is fitting that the President's Award be re-named the Charles Hummel Award” said Idaho Smart Growth Board President Doug Fowler of Lenir LTD. “His compassionate dedication to making the world a better place and Idaho in particular gives all who follow after him an example to emulate.”

» Bike Talk: Presented by Boise Bicycle Project
September 01, 2010
Bike Talk: Presented by Boise Bicycle Project, Thursday Sept 16 at 7pm in the Linen Building
A simple 19th Century invention - the bicycle - just may well be one of the most important urban vehicles of the 21st Century. In cities around the U.S., the bicycle is increasingly being seen as a serious transportation alternative. Political journalist Jeff Mapes spent three years investigating the growth of the urban bike movement for his book, Pedaling Revolution, and discovered how it is beginning to change the look and feel of cities ranging from Portland to New York. In just a little over a decade after Portland began building a system of bikeways, roughly 7 percent of citizens cycle to work - and in some neighborhoods more than a quarter say cycling is their primary or secondary form of transportation. In New York, the city is beginning to build separated cycletracks that someday could allow a family to comfortably cycle from Battery Park to Central Park in the country's densest city.
Jeff talks about how health, environmental and quality of life concerns are converging to create a vibrant urban bike movement, as well as the challenges and prospects it faces. Author of “Pedaling Revolution: How Cyclists are Changing American Cities,” will speak on Thursday, September 16, 2010 in Boise, 7:00 PM at the Linen Building Events Center. Presented by the Boise Bicycle Project. Tickets $5 at the door.
