Demand for more compact, walkable, and mixed-use neighborhoods is on the rise, yet resistance to density often prevents their construction. This presentation uses stunning aerial photography to show why we need to build in a denser pattern, why many people are skeptical of density, and how design plays a key role in our attitudes. It promotes the use of better planning and design to create appealing, high-density neighborhoods.

This presentation will discuss the role of quality design in the context of development feasibility. Experience shows that successful projects can best be realized when a balance is struck between quality design, financial feasibility, and a clear understanding of the needs, desires, and capability of the markets to be served. These elements must be equally proportioned for long-term success.

Making a Great City by Design – Themes from Recent Vancouver Experience

  • 5:30 reception
  • 6:00 – 7:30 presentation and questions

Please confirm your attendance: 855-2558, ext 222 or msampson@compassidaho.org.

Sponsored by Capital City Development Corporation

Using Vancouver, in Canada, as an example, Larry Beasley will outline the key themes for great urbanism. He will show how the city by design is a major strategy for economic development and community tranquility. The sustainable city of the future will be about intensity of activities, mixed use, and provision of community and cultural infrastructure. Mr. Beasley will illustrate how to achieve all of these objectives while facilitating major development opportunities and general business growth in the city. He will show how a “living first” strategy for inner-city housing can revitalize a downtown and confirm its central role in a region, responding to both demographic trends and marketing potentials. Mr. Beasley outlines a new way of planning our cities, called by him “experiential planning”, that can tap into deeply held aspirations, even longings, that our citizens have for their community and for their personal lives.
